Michael G. Cowan
June 2, 1948 ~ April 3, 2025
Michael George Cowan, 76, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025. Born on June 2, 1948, to the late George and Ruth (Switzer) Cowan, Mike was a beloved husband, father and friend.
Mike grew up in South Bend, graduating from Riley High School where he played the baritone horn in the school band and would often street race with the guys, he continued to love the sport of racing throughout his entire life. Mike proudly served in the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post 360 and was a true patriot at heart.
On June 28, 1986, Mike married Patti (Longley) Dolce, they shared 38 years together knitting together a loving family with Patti’s daughters, Jennifer and Melissa. Mike was employed as a truck driver for 35 years and was awarded highest honors for safe driving, never having one accident in his entire career.
Mike enjoyed many pastimes such as fishing, air shows, car racing, cooking and watching Notre Dame football games. Mike had an adventurous spirit, he once had the opportunity to pilot an aircraft and was also able to experience racing at its best by driving laps at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, both of which he never forgot.
Mike’s family was very important to him. He loved cooking for them especially making a big breakfast with Belgian waffles and joking around with his three granddaughters. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Patti, his stepdaughters; Jennifer (Steve) Hanson of Zionsville, IN and Melissa (Claudio Molina) Dolce of Tampa FL, his granddaughters; Brooke Hanson, Charlotte Hanson and Macie Hanson. He is also survived by his brother Mark (Kathy) Cowan of Kansas City, MO. Mike was preceded by his parents, and his sister Janet Cowan.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
