In loving memory of Billy James Petit, known affectionately to many as Billy or Bill, who peacefully departed this world on September 13, 2026. Born on March 18, 1951, in Evansville, Indiana, Billy lived a life marked by love and an unwavering devotion to the people and passions that mattered most to him.
Billy spent much of his youth in South Bend, Indiana, where he attended Oliver School for his elementary education and later graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School. Those who knew him from childhood remember his familiar smile and easygoing nature, qualities he carried with him throughout his journey.
He dedicated 26 years of his life to serving his country as a member of the United States Air Force. His military service was a testament to his strong sense of duty, discipline, and willingness to give of himself for something greater. He approached life with a quiet strength and a dependable spirit, qualities that were evident both in uniform and in the way he treated others. Following his military service, Billy worked in defense contracting. He was also a man of many talents, enjoying the challenge of managing rental properties and utilizing his keen eye for investing in stocks.
Outside of his professional life, Billy appreciated the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. He loved music and was an avid sports fan who particularly cherished basketball and Notre Dame football. He will be remembered most for his loving and kind nature, and his deep faithfulness to his family and friends.
Family was the true heart of Billy's world. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Draper and Rosa Pettit; his great-aunt, Lizzie Hendrix; his uncle, James Pettit Sr.; and his cousin, James Pettit Jr.
He is survived by his devoted mother, Mary Lisembee, and his loving sister, Carolyn Cox. Billy was a proud and devoted father to his daughters, Jennifer (Kent) Neukam and Niealie Petit, who were his greatest joy. His love extended to his cherished grandchildren, Aria and Ava Neukam, with whom he deeply valued his special bond. He is also lovingly remembered by his uncle, Herschel Gilder; his aunt, Laura Meredith; his cousins, Constance Pettit, Arestha Pettit, Noah Pettit, and Demond (Marchelle) Pettit; and countless friends whose lives he touched.
A viewing will be held on September 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Palmer Funeral Home Guisinger Chapel. Following the viewing, a service to celebrate Billy's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Southlawn Cemetery. His family invites all who knew and loved him to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived.
