Margaret J. (Gargis) Daugherty, of South Bend, passed away quietly on Wednesday evening, May 27, 2026, on her 90th birthday, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Margaret was born May 27, 1936, in Sheffield, Alabama to Richard and Reba (Jones) Gargis. At age three, Margaret and her parents moved to South Bend where they settled. Margaret graduated from Riley High School in 1954.

On July 30, 1955, in South Bend, Margaret married the love of her life, James E. Daugherty. As a young couple they joined a "Home Builders" Sunday School class where lifetime friendships were formed with marriage/ and family support. Together they shared 57 wonderful years together until his passing on March 16, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Gargis, her granddaughter Victoria Leslie Carter and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Wallace.

Margaret started her career with Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. Retail sales careers followed at the former Robertson's Department Store and L S Ayres where she retired in 2000 with 23 years of service. Volunteering at Southgate Church in many ministries was treasured but the Nursery was her favorite. Margaret was always happy with a baby in her arms. Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren were her passion and she was present at every activity. Never wanting to miss an opportunity to teach them, she hosted "The University of Margaret". Her version of playing school.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Nancy Daugherty of Osceola, daughter and son-in-law, Diane & Jim Carter of South Bend along with five grandchildren, Katie (Tim) Bauman, Audrey (Jack) McGrew, William (Grace Korn) Carter, Kayla Daugherty, and Krysta (Jordan Bowen) Daugherty, and four great grandchildren, Aliyah Daugherty, Beau and Noah Bauman, and Ruby Margaret McGrew. She is also survived by her sister Shirley (Richard) Jennings of Cypress, TX, and her sister-in-law, Sharon Gargis of Bremen, IN.

Services celebrating Margaret’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Southgate Church, 3717 S. Michigan St., South Bend, with Rev. Jeff Kennedy and Rev. Bill Howell officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan St., South Bend, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Church.
