Jay Lynn Poland, 64, of South Bend, Ind., passed away following an illness on Sunday evening, Aug. 13, in Memorial Hospital: He was born on April 17, 1936, in South Bend, to the late James and Alietha (Long) Poland, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Cherie K.

Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce J. Wentland, who he married on Sept. 10, 1960; his children, Melissa (Timothy) Murdock of South Bend, Melinda (William) Lawecki of Granger, Ind., Stephen J. (Tina) Poland of Mishawaka, Ind.; four grandchildren, William N. and Benjamin Lawecki, Stephen M. and Joshua L. Poland; and by a stepbrother, Mark Poland of South Bend.

Mr. Poland retired after 44 years of service from Gates Chevrolet Company, South Bend. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in the Navy Reserves for 32 years. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 58 in South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, in the WELSHEIMER NORTH FUNERAL HOME, 17033 Cleveland Road, with the Rev. Gregory Green, C.S.C., officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, University of Notre Dame. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 16, in the funeral home, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.
