SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 21 (AP)—Two gunmen took two policemen and two women hostages and headed out of town in an unmarked police van tonight, the police said. A state police helicopter followed the van, the authorities said.

The men, armed with shotguns, originally took five persons hostage in a downtown clothing store during an attempted robbery and held them captive for about two hours, the police said.

Three of the hostages were released after Officers Larry Hostetler and Paul Harvey volunteered to become hostages.
