Carol Lynn (Shafer) Benson
January 27, 1942 ~ July 9, 2025
Carol L. Benson, 83, of Mishawaka, Indiana passed away at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in the Raclin House.
Carol was born on January 27, 1942 in South Bend, Indiana to George “Eldon” and Lucinda (Fertick) Shafer. For many years she worked as a librarian, crossing guard, and cook at Forest G. Hay Elementary, St. Matthews School, and Marian High School. She later completed her nursing assistant degree and later, her RN degree at the age of 46 while working full time at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She retired as a Registered Nurse in the Step-Down Cardiac Unit after 20 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her late husband Glenn S. Benson, who passed on January 3, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her sister, June Shinall and two brothers, William and Gene Shafer. Carol is survived by her daughter, Janet (David) Sipp of Granger, Indiana; her son, David (Lois) Horvath of Granger, Indiana; and eight grandchildren, Samuel, Lucie, Sarah, Erin, Grace, William, Paul and Jude Horvath.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Pius X Parish. Burial will follow in Porter Rae Cemetery, North Liberty, Indiana.
Carol enjoyed nursing, antiquing, shopping, jewelry and genealogy. Her faith was very important to her. She participated in active Bible Studies at St. Pius X Parish and at the New Carlisle United Methodist Church.
