John Allen “Jack” Rhoades Sr.

John Allen Rhoades, Sr. (Jack), 86, of Huntersville died August 1, 2022. He was born on September 4, 1935 in South Bend, IN to the late Earl and Goldie Rhoades. Mr. Rhoades taught high school English, Speech, and Drama for 38 years and directed over 100 plays and musicals. He also directed community and children's theater and specialized in set design, costuming and casting. His wife, Margaret, accompanied his musicals on the piano and they had an interior decorating business together. John sang in glee club in college and gave voice lessons and played the piano. He enjoyed telling stories and performing the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. He encouraged and mentored countless students.
Jack published a book of his poetry and a children's book called 'Singo, the Flamingo' that he also illustrated. He also created scenery for the Lexington Ballet in Kentucky.
Jack was a Methodist minister until learning about the Bahá'í Faith and declaring his belief in Bahá'u'lláh in 1970. He served on Local Spiritual Assemblies in Indiana, Kentucky and North Carolina.
He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret Ann Rhoades. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2018.
Survivors include sons John A. Rhoades, Jr. and Danny Rhoades; daughters, Lori Daugherty and Tammy Rhoades-Baldwin; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am Friday, August 5 at James Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10-11 am prior. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens. A luncheon will follow the graveside at the family home: 11510 Warfield Dr., Huntersville, NC 28078.
