Rita R. (Vitale) Jankowski

SOUTH BEND Rita R. Jankowski, 56, of Selkirk Drive, died at 8:40 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital after an illness. Mrs. Jankowski was employed by Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse for 36 years. She was born June 20, 1938, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.

On May 14, 1966, in South Bend, as Rita Vitale, she married Stefan Jankowski. He survives with a daughter, Teresa A. Jankowski of South Bend; a son, John E. of South Bend; two grandchildren; her mother, Carmela M. Vitale of South Bend; a sister, Laura Carpenter of Lakeland, Fla.; and two brothers, Santo J. Vitale and Alberto S. Vitale, both of South Bend.

She was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, a member of Indiana State Nurses Association, American Society of Post Anestheisa Nurses and St. Matthew Cathedral, was a stadium nurse at Stanley Covelski Regional Stadium and served as a Democratic precinct committeeman. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Entombment will be at Highland Mausoleum.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today in Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Memorial Hospital
