Robert J. Benko

Robert (Bob) J. Benko, 79, of Renfrew Drive, passed away at 10:15 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. Bob was born on May 4, 1923, in South Bend and has lived here all his life.
On March 23, 1944, he wed Barbara Walker, with whom he spent 57 years. Mr. Benko worked at Benko and Sons for over 40 years with his father, Joseph, and brother, Richard. The business was started in 1929 and continued until 1986. Bob enjoyed life, people and doing volunteer work, mainly in the Rum Village area.
He was Past President of the Rum Village Businessman's Association and the Rum Village Neighborhood Association. Mr. Benko was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 50, the Loyal Order of Moose, and the Mishawaka Eagles. Bob was also active in the Riley High School "Over the Hill" Alumni.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ulee Benko; his wife, Barbara Benko; a son, Larry Benko; and a grandson, Joey.
Surviving are a daughter, Pam Benko of South Bend; two grandchildren, Kerri Vanacker and Tracey (Mike) Bubelenyi; two great-grandchildren, Allison Ballinger and Ethan Bubelenyi; two sisters, Ora Lee Crowel of South Bend and Rosemary (Bob) McCloughan of Elkhart; and a brother, Richard (Sherrie) Benko of South Bend.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Ave. Military services will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 Sunday in the funeral home. Memorial contribution can be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County. Robert J. Benko.
