Reginald D. Carpenter, Sr.

April 23, 1917 - June 24, 1999

Reginald D. Carpenter, Sr., 82, of South 31st Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 5:43 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, in the Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend.

He was born on April 23, 1917, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to the late Roy and Ethel (Weaver) Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by a son, Reginald D, Carpenter, Jr., on April 24, 1995; two sisters, Gladys Brynes and Kathleen Carpenter; and by three brothers, Ross Carpenter, Durwood Carpenter and Fred Carpenter. On March 14, 1942, in South Bend, he married Mildred W. Samuels.

A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Carpenter was co-owner of South Bend Litho-Plate and worked as a lithographer until his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed their Birch Lake Cottage in Vandalia, Mich., where he was a great fisherman and "knew all the favorite fishing spots." Reginald served as a captain in the United States Army during World War Il; and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was past president of the Craftsman's Club in South Bend, and attended the Gospel Center Missionary Church, South Bend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mildred; three daughters, Carolyn (Tom) Jewell of Indianapolis, Ind., Nancy (Tom) Connelly of Webster Groves, Mo., and Janice Melton of Mishawaka, Ind.; two: sons, William (Ann) Carpenter of South Bend and Richard (Valerie) Carpenter of Chicago, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and by a brother, Donald Carpenter of South Bend.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 28, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, with Rev. Warren Banks officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, in the funeral home.
