Dean W. Detweiler

MUNCIE - Dean W. Detweiler, 83, former Muncie and Hagerstown resident, died Monday evening, June 17, at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Calif. A native of Goshen, Ind., he was a member of the Navajo fraternity (now Lambda Chi Alpha) and graduated from Ball State teachers College in 1941. He later received his master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
He was past president of the Ball State Alumni Association and also received the Ball State alumni distinguished service award and the outstanding journalism department award. During World War II, Mr. Detweiler served in the Army as an information-education officer in New Caledonia and later as an adjutant general with the Army in Hawaii. He remained with the Army Reserve after his discharge as a captain in 1946. While an Indiana resident after World War II, he worked as director of public relations and employee communications for the Perfect Circle Co. (now Dana Corp.). During his tenure with the Perfect Circle Co., he directed the PC Men's Choir and also the choir at the First Presbyterian Church in Richmond. After his move with his family to California in 1965. Mr. Detweiler worked for California State University at Hayward as director of community relations and later as extension coordinator until his retiremente in choir at 1983.
He also directed the choir at the Frist Presbyterian Church, Danville, Calif., where he was a member and an elder. Throughout his business careers, he remained an active member of Rotary clubs in Indiana and California for nearly 40 years and served as president of the Hayward, Calif. club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Betty Norrick: three daughters, Sally Platt of Marietta, Ga., Susie Pinckard (husband: Tom) of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Cynny Miller (husband: Steve) of Port Orange, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Stoner of Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Detweiler, who had lived in the South Bend area, and a brother, Gerald, a former Muncie resident.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. (Calif. time) on Saturday, June 22, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, Calif., after cremation. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Rotary Foundation, 1560 Sherman Ave., Evanston, Ill, 60201
