Dorothy A Powell (Nelson)

Dorothy Alvina "Doodie" (Powell) Nelson

Dorothy Alvina Powell Nelson, Wife of Mr. Fred Nelson and daughter of the late Alex and Freda Powell, passed away November 4, 2008 in Hendersonville, NC. Dorothy was born on April 17, 1918 in South Bend, Indiana and was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.

Dorothy, or “Doodie” as her family fondly called her, had a Servant’s Heart and was truly a blessing to every life that she touched. Dorothy lived life to the fullest and never missed an opportunity to serve others. Throughout her life she served in many capacities as a Lay Person in her Church. In the 30’s and 40’s, she served as an Air Raid Warden and volunteered in Migrant Ministry.

Doodie loved spending time with her family playing Scrabble, Yahtzee and cards ( but as her grandkids know, Doodie did not play with cheaters), she loved to Polka with her grandchildren, sing with them or just sit and chat. Doodie always had a funny story to tell and was proud of her German heritage and loved to pepper her conversation with German words. Doodie was a terrific cook always made sure we ate our vegetables and she made terrific pancakes.

Dorothy never missed an opportunity to be a caregiver to family, friends and even a stranger in need.

Dorothy retired in 1975 as Bookkeeper of John Adams High School and formerly was employed with Ball-Band.

Dorothy is survived by her sister Elenor Stall and brother James Powell. A daughter Fredie DeWachter and her husband Gary and a step-daughter Sharon Nelson. Three grandchildren- Heather ( Chip), Ryan ( Brenda) and Jenny ( Josh), Five great grandchildren- Brandon, Kathryn and Zackery Williamson, Tommy Cullen and Jackson Moore.

No services are planned at this time.
