Meri Katherine (Thompson) Miller

Jan. 22, 1917 – Aug. 21, 2009

SOUTH BEND — Meri Katherine Miller, 92, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 29, in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend, IN. She was born January 22, 1917, in Marion, IN, to the late Howard and Zora (Dorton) Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her only brother, Robert Thompson.

Meri lived in South Bend all her life, and was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived a very active life, and after raising her children began working in 1964 for South Bend’s city building departments of electrical and heating as a secretary. After three years she was employed as secretary to Mayor Lloyd Allen. She later became secretary to City Engineer Lloyd Taylor.

In 1984 Meri retired and spent her time with needlework and gardening. She was always full of life, and was very giving of herself to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind her family whom she loved deeply, a son, Jack T. Miller (Mardy) of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Vandalia, MI; a daughter, Kristina K. Waggoner (Lamont) of South Bend; three grandchildren, Dina Martin (Brad) of Memphis, TN, Dean C. Waggoner (Nicole) of Niles, MI, and Lamont M. Waggoner III of South Bend; and five great-grandsons, Dean C. Waggoner II and Douglas Justin Waggoner, both of Niles, and Miles Jeffrey Martin, Brian Wesley Martin and Jack Bradley Martin, all of Memphis, TN.

The family wishes to thank all of the special people of Sanctuary at Holy Cross, nurses, aides and the entire staff for their love for Meri and their kindness to her and her family. We also want to thank the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of South Bend for their help during her last days.

A private memorial service and cremation will take place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 521 N. William St., is assisting the family with arrangements. Family and friends may send e-mail condolences to welshfh@yahoo.com
