William served as a Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G #42-37903, 525th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in St. Joseph County, Indiana prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on October 5, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a driver and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-37903 took off, with a crew of 9, from Kimbolton, England on a bombing mission over Merseberg, Germany. Over the target they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which damaged an engine and a fuel line. They made an attempt to return to base however, based on eyewitness accounts, they had to make a crash landing. The entire crew was lost in this crash.
