Delbert W Knebel

April 22, 1926 - Jan. 18, 2014

SOUTH BEND - Delbert W. Knebel, 87, of South Bend passed away Saturday, January 18, 2013 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Knebel was born April 22, 1926 in South Bend to the late Ida (Kraseman) and William Knebel.

On August 26, 1951 in South Bend he married Martha B. Wiley who preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by two sons, David Knebel (Mary) of Mishawaka, IN and Randy Knebel of South Bend; one daughter, Linda Sue Knebel of South Bend, two grandchildren, William Knebel (Dawna) of Bloomington, IL and Katie Knebel of South Bend; a newborn great grandson, Nicholas Knebel; and a loving sister, Irma Eichorst whom he talked with on the phone once or twice a week; and his beloved dog, Bandit II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his most caring brother in the world, Paul Knebel in 1975; and most recently his other beloved dog, Max II.

Dad was employed by Martin/Parrish Machine for 44 years retiring in sales in 1990. He spent two years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was deployed to the Philippines and one year in Japan. Since Mom passed away, Randy and Linda have always been by his side. Linda loved taking care of her Dad. Randy made sure that he had plenty of home cooked meals especially on the weekend, whether it be ribs, chicken, or steak with home grown tomatoes and peppers. The kids loved to see Dad eat good and made sure he got plenty of his favorite Taco Bell or Wendy's chili and Frosty's. Linda was always there for doctor visits for her wonderful father and dad. David was always there too, helping out. He would always call for advice which Dad loved to give. He gave David great mathematical skills which he uses and cherishes to this day. We will never forget the fond memories David, Randy and Dad sitting in a row boat Blue Gill fishing. Dad was the best Blue Gill fisherman. Boy did we have fun.

As per his wishes, cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory. There will be no visitation and a private graveside service with military honors will be held at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association . Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.

We will miss you, Dad, but you are in a better place with no more pain, just at peace with Mom and God in Heaven. We love you, Dad, and always will. We'll never forget you, never! You were the best Dad in the whole world.
