William Emil Trimmer

April 22, 1916 – May 26, 2004

William Emil “Bill” Trimmer, 88, of Tonti Street, South Bend, Ind., died of natural causes at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Bill was born April 22, 1916, to the late Matthew and Mary (Schuster) Trimmer, and was a lifelong South Bend resident.

He graduated from Riley High School in 1934, and attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

On June 8, 1940, in South Bend, he married Norma Davis, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Paul W. (Jodie) Trimmer of Elkhart, Ind., and Thomas (Nancy) Trimmer of Birmingham, Mich.; a daughter, Carolyn (Edward) Thomas of Traverse City, Mich.; five beloved grandchildren, Kristen (John) Freshley of Ann Arbor, Mich., Karen (Dan) Beck of Elkhart, Robert (Eva) Trimmer of Osceola, Ind., Thomas D. Trimmer Jr. and Michelle (Scott) Baby, both of Chicago, Ill.; and five great-grandchildren.

Bill retired from Bendix Aerospace in 1971 as the director of purchasing. He was employed there for 32 years. After retirement, Bill enjoyed traveling and was an avid gardener. He was also a master craftsman, creating and meticulously building numerous pieces of fine furniture and accessories. He was a lifelong learner who loved challenging his family with vocabulary or brain teasers and discussing current events. His sharp mind and wit will be missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m.Friday, May 28, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. John P. Riley, C.S.C., officiating.Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery
