HOWARD CHARLES NEDDERMAN was born in Mishawaka, Indiana. He had three siblings: Carl W Nedderman 1909-1970, Ethel Jennie Dorothy Nedderman 1911-2006, and Harold Nedderman 1921-1987. Census records indicate his father was a factory laborer. Howard married my grandmother Marjorie Castle in 1940.
He attended PURDUE University where he received his BS and MS. He would later graduate with his PhD from Columbia University in Physics. He and his wife had four children, Richard, twins Rebecca and Charles (Butch) and Julie. At this time Rebecca and Julie are the only living family members (Oct 2013). He is listed in American Men & Women of Science 12th, thru 18th Edition. He was a member of the American Physicists Society. He was well known and respected Physicist. He wrote for Scientific Magazines and journals. Authors: Howard C. Nedderman J. Appl. Phys. 26 1420 1955 DOI: 10.1063/1.1721926 The spaceācharge distribution in a static magnetron, this was his main invention. He also served in the US Army WWII.
My mother says her father was a man of few words. He made many inventions how at the time he was living those inventions belonged to your employer. He loved classical music and had hundreds of 78's that he set up under the Dewey Decimal system. According to my mother one of his favorites 1812 Overture. He smoked a pipe, which I can remember, with cherry tobacco. He had a home office with a large marker board always filled with math equations. He enjoyed gardening. He and my grandmother loved to travel.
I only have a single memory of him, we picked him up at the airport LAX (Los Angeles) he was wearing a suit coat and smoking a pipe. I remember he was kind ot me and that his pipe smelled wonderful. Distance and circumstances prevented my from having a relationship with him.
