Thomas Edward Moorman
February 9, 1932 ~ October 12, 2024 92 Years Old
Thomas E. Moorman, 92, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Elkhart Place, in Elkhart. Tom was born February 9, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Clement Moorman and Mary (Huber) Moorman.
He was a graduate of Riley High School where he met his future wife Rosemary (Megyese) Moorman. On September 15, 1951, they were married at St. Jude Catholic Church of South Bend. She preceded him in death after 64 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Moorman Jr; two brothers, Clem B., and John A. Moorman and a sister, Betty Jo Miller.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Mary Ann Kuzmic of Colorado, his beloved companion Jill Graff of South Bend; his children, Pamela L. (Jim) Goddard-Dunfee of Elkhart, Michael J. (Linda) Moorman of Mishawaka, and Susan M. Collier of South Bend; grandchildren, Stacy (Jeffrey) Goddard-Vervynckt, Jeffrey Goddard, Richie Moorman, Laura (Kevin) Wilken, Kristina (Buzz) Phelps, Schaune (Drew) Johnson, Kristopher Moorman, Josh Moorman, Dan (Sommer) Collier, Sara Collier, Thomas (Brianne) Collier, Casey (Britney) Collier; 29 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.
Tom lived in Mishawaka for the majority of his life. He was the epitome of a self-made man. He owned a service station on South Michigan Street, South Bend for years before owning a tavern on 4th Street in Mishawaka. He ended up owning and operating Moorman’s Service Center on the corner of 4th Street and Main Street in Mishawaka for the remainder of his career. Tom was a very hard worker and a great provider for his beloved wife and family. His children were fortunate to enjoy summers growing up at a cottage on Gravel Lake in Michigan and eventually his grandchildren. He loved spending time at his cabin near Cadilac, Michigan and would fly family and hunting buddies there to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
He earned his pilot’s license and was a long- time member/part owner of Mishawaka Pilots Club. Tom was a member of St. Bavo’s Catholic Church and for years He played an active role working fish fry’s and other functions to support the school. He belonged to the St. Vincent De Paul Society and insisted his children help with food basket deliveries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bk and DeAmicis Club, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles
Tom had many hobbies over the years. He enjoyed water sports, boating, tinkering with motors, fishing, and hunting deer with a bow and arrow all the way up into his late 80’s, making wine, playing golf, making golf clubs, flying his plane, working on his RV, canning the produce from his huge garden, that did start to shrink over the years. He continued his active lifestyle up until his late 80’s.
Tom always had a positive outlook, even in the most troubling of times, he would find a ray of sunshine in any situation. He certainly lived life to the fullest until he could not.
Visitation for Tom will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 2:00 PM- 6:00 PM, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th Street, Mishawaka. A time for sharing will take place at 5:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, October 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM, in St. Bavo’s Church, 511 W 7th Street, Mishawaka. A private burial will be held at a later date in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
