Dorothy Jean (Spurlock) Berry

Dorothy Jean Berry, 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Lancaster Community Hospital in Lancaster, California with her husband and her five children at her side.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Bert Berry.; her children Catherine May, Elizabeth (Dale) Stowell, Jeanine (Ben) Tarver, Robert (Lisa) Berry and Suzanne (Eric) Maki; her brother, Kenneth Spurlock; seven grandchildren and eight great-children; and four nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Arnold and Marjorie Spurlock; her sister, Janet Bartchard; and her two grandsons Michael Bolyard and Michael Berry.

Dorothy was born March 26, 1933 in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1951, and married her high school sweetheart, Bert, on May 2, 1953.

Tired of the cold winters in Indiana, the offer of a new job opportunity brought the young family to California where they lived in Hollywood for many years. For the past fourteen years her home was in Acton, California.

Dorothy was a talented and creative homemaker. She loved nature, gardening, needlework, genealogy, reading, theatric performances, and finding the occasional treasure at thrift stores or yard sales. Among other occupations, she worked for Fedco in Van Nuys and as a caregiver for elderly clients in Fresno.

She was lovingly generous and supportive of her husband, children, family members and friends. Always a good listener, Dorothy knew how to comfort and to laugh; her common sense, quiet strength and faith bolstered those around her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Cremation arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
