Dorothy Bernice (Cowles) Cummins

Dorothy B. Cummins, 82, of Climax and formerly of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1996, at Battle Creek Health System, where she had been a patient since Sunday. She was born July 30, 1914, in Springfield, Mass., to Thomas L.and Hulda Ruby (Hinkley) Cowles. A 1931 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend, Ind., she attended Cincinnati University for one year. She received a bachelor of design degree from the University of Michigan in 1936. She worked for Detroit Mantle & Tile Co.

for three years; Tuttle & Clark Department Store as a buyer for four years; Grinnells for four years; McCurdy in Rochester, N.Y., as a table linen buyer; and Princess Shop in Battle Creek as manager for one year before raising her family. She moved to Battle Creek in 1945 and then to Climax in 1968. She married former Bernard T. "Babe" Cummins on July 21, 1945, in Rochester, N.Y. He died in 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas T. Cummins and Fred H. Cummins both of Battle Creek; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Warren Cowles. Community involvement, hobbies: Member of Climax United Methodist Church.

She volunteered at Lawrence Library in Climax, serving over 10 years as a licensed librarian; active in the Climax Library Fund Drive; one of the organizers and a charter member of Prairie Historical Society and a life member of Battle Creek Kennel Club. She enjoyed genealogy, painting, crocheting, design, sewing and knitting. She made most of her own clothing.

Visitation: After 10 a.m. Thursday at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Climax United Methodist church with the Rev. David F. Hills officiating. Burial: Roof Cemetery. Memorials: Climax United Methodist Church or Lawrence Library in Climax. James Moore Battle Creek James Moore, 71, of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1996, at his home. Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Royal Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
