Teen Killed, Two Hurt in Auten Crash
One teenager was killed and two others seriously injured late Wednesday night when their car struck a tree at St. Joseph County Auten and Helen. The dead youth, Jerry D. Grenert, 19, of 1341 E. Calvert, was dead on arrival at 12:07 a.m. today at Memorial Hospital.
County police said Grenert was driving west on Auten about 11:15 p.m. at an apparent high speed when his car slid off the roadway, causing the youth to lose control. The auto traveled a short distance off the road a and struck a tree, according to investigators. Clay Twp. firemen were summoned to help police rescue Grenert, who was pinned in the wreckage. Police said there were no other witnesses to the accident.
