Jalayne Marie (Barkley) Metz

Jalayne Metz, 34, of Painesville, Ohio, a former teacher at Navarre and Lafayette schools here, was killed at 4:49 p.m. Sunday in a train-car accident in Painesville. Mrs. Metz and her son, Gene, 4, and daughter, Jalanne, 3, were thrown from the car driven by her husband, Dr. Fred Metz, when it was struck by a New York Central System freight train at a city crossing. Mrs. Metz was killed instantly. The coroner ruled that she died of head injuries, Dr. Metz told Painesville police that he was northbound and had stopped at the crossing to allow an eastbound passenger train to pass. When he thought the crossing was clear he pulled onto the tracks. He told police that when he spotted the westbound New York Central train coming toward him his car stalled.

The train struck the right rear of the car, spinning it around. Mrs. Metz was hurled onto a track and the two children landed underneath the Metz auto. Dr. Metz, who had fastened his seat belt, remained in the car.

Wesley C. Rank, of Cleveland, engineer, said he was traveling 40 miles an hour and applied the brakes. Railroad officials said the flasher signal lights were in operation.

Mrs. Metz, the former Jalayne Barkley, was born in 1931 in South Bend. A graduate of Riley High School, she received her bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College and her M. A. from Indiana University. She and Dr. Metz were married in Bloomington. He is a research chemist with Diamond Alkali Research Center, Painesville. The family moved from South Bend to Painesville about three years ago.

Services will be Wednesday in the Harmon Funeral Home, McComb, Ohio, and burial Thursday in Lakeville, Ind. Memorial donations may be made to the Jalayne Metz memorial fund of the Lutheran Home of Mercy, Williston, Ohio.
