Robert A. Powell, 80, formerly of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 1:35 a.m.
on Saturday, Nov. 27, in the Hospice of the Valley Home in Scottsdale, Ariz. Bob was born in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 3, 1919, to the late Alexander and Frieda (Niemann) Powell. He had lived in Mishawaka before moving to Mesa, Ariz., three years ago.
On Sept. 6, 1941, Bob married the former Harriet Eberhardt, who also preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 1995. On June 29, 1996, he married the former Betty Decker, who survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Carolyn Grant of Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Robert J. Powell of Syracuse, Ind., and Dr. Ronald Powell of Mishawaka; two stepdaughters, Lynn Verhaeghe of Wyatt, Ind., and Cynthia Decker of Trinidad, Colo.; three stepsons, Thomas Decker of Albuquerque, N.M., Jerry Decker of Trinidad and Michael Decker of Mesa; six grandchildren, Alanna Colborn, Brian, Elyse and Bethel Powell, Jennifer Grant and Cheryl Finnerty; seven step-grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Verhaeghe, Jesse, Jonah, Johann, Jason and Isabel Decker; two step-great-grandchildren, Brittany and Jordan Verhaeghe; three sisters, Elenora Stahl and Dorothy Nelson, both of Mesa, and Margaret Griman of South Bend; and by a brother, Jim Powel of South Bend.
Bob retired as a vice-president of First Source Bank (First National Bank) in Mishawaka in 1985 after 38 years of service. Prior to that he had worked for the Wheelabrator-Frye Corporation. Bob was a 1937 graduate of South Bend Riley High School, and was a World War II Navy veteran serving with the Sea Bees.
He was a member of the Mishawaka Lions Club, Eagles Aerie 2083, served as a commissioner with the Mishawaka Redevelopment Commission, and was a member of the founding committee for East End Little League in Mishawaka. He was also a member of Club 15 in Mishawaka
