MISHAWAKA - Matthew "Matt" Benko, 97, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend. Matt was born on November 28, 1917, in Clinton, IN, to Matthew and Mary (Roth) Benko. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mary Wagner and Rosanne Andrysiak.
On November 17, 1950, in Mishawaka, he married the former Genevieve "Jenny" Van Hoedt. She preceded him in death on February 13, 2005.
Surviving are four children, Matt (Lynn) Benko III of Oak Park, IL, Mary Jo Stringer of Richardson, TX, William (Deborah) Benko of Fairview, TX, and Anna Marie (Jim) Busch of Portage, MI; nine grandchildren, Robert, Jacquelyn, Andrew and Daniel Busch, Michael, Katheryn and Patrick Benko, Savanah and Matthew Benko IV; and a great-grandson, James Robert Busch III.
Matt graduated from IUSB with his Master's. He was a teacher for School City of Mishawka for 20 years and retired in 1986. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church, the BK Club, DeAmici's Club and the Eagles.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bavo Catholic Church, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bavo Catholic Church, 511 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
