SOUTH BEND — Steven Bernat, 90, passed away on March 8, 2009 at the Lowell Health Care Center in Lowell, Indiana. Steven was born on January 27, 1919 to the late George and Theresa Bernat.He is also preceded in death by his sisters, Julia MacJannet, Theresa Bernat and his brothers, John Bernat and Joseph Bernat.

He is survived by his nephew, John MacJannet of Lowell, Indiana and his niece, Judy Hough of Hammond, Indiana.

Steven served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the 63rd infantry Division in artillery and as a battlefield photographer involved in numerous European battles. He trained at Camp Van Doran in Mississippi in 1943. After the war, he worked in Torrington Bearing and South Bend Tool & Die, while residing on Myrtle Road in South Bend until 2004.

A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S. 31 S. South Bend. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend is handling the arrangements.
