Joseph J. Giczi

SOUTH BEND - Joseph J. Giczi, 76, of Mayflower Road died at 11:20 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Medical Center. Mr. Giczi retired in 1983 from the National Elevator Constructors Union where he worked for numerous elevator companies. He was born on March 11, 1920 in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.
On Oct. 19, 1946, in South Bend, he married Regina Litka who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Regina Ann Giczi of South Bend; two sons, Gregory J. of Granger and Brian C. South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Mary Beth (McGill) Giczi; one granddaughter, Alexis Giczi; and a sister, Olga Petzke of South Bend.
A brother, Theodore (Giczi) Gibson, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Gardens in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. The Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553 will join the parish in reciting a rosary at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Giczi received The George Cooper Award in 1964 for his heroism. He was a Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Burma, China, Italy and India. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9820, Bowler's County Club and Chain O'Lakes Conservation Club.
