BENNNINGTON Phyllis L. Morrissey, 94, widow of Gerald E. Morrissey, a longtime resident of Dewey St. in Bennington died Saturday February 2, 2013 at her residence. She was born in South Bend, Indiana January 26, 1919. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Szalewski) Lukasiak. She received her education in the South Bend school system.

She met her future husband, Gerald E. Morrissey of Bennington, while he attended the University of Notre Dame. They married August 31, 1940 in South Bend. Mr. Morrissey died November 14, 2002.

Mrs. Morrissey managed a large household, raising seven children. In her spare time, she also was Vice President of Gerald E. Morrissey Construction

She was a devout Catholic and active member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales parish. Her home and family were her main interest. An active card player, she introduced the game of pinochle to many friends and family. She loved music and dance, especially polka. She was an accomplished cook and known for her ability to handle large dinner events with style and grace. Her home-made sausage was re-knowned and widely sought after. She closely followed Notre Dame sports and spent many Saturday cheering for the Fighting Irish football team.

Survivors include her children, Walter E. Morrissey of Bethlehem, Pa., Brian J. Morrissey of Bennington, Timothy J. Morrissey of Bolton, Mass., Diane M. Daley of Bennington and Representative Mary A. Morrissey of Bennington; nine grandchildren, including Jason P. Morrissey of North Bennington, six great grandchildren; a sister, Molly Pfuehler of Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Morrissey was pre-deceased by a daughter, Jane M. Maloney and a son, Gerald P. Morrissey.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of her health care providers, especially Sharon Moore from VNA.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday February 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday February 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
