Mae Ann (Foster) Hans

Mae Ann Hans, 78, of Wilshire Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, in Memorial Hospital, due to the results of a serious fall in which her neck was broken at her residence on June 17. She was born on Oct. 10, 1919, in Talcott, W.Va. to Amanda (Dane) and Luther M. Foster, both of whom preceded her in death.
On April 5, 1942, at First Baptist Church in downtown South Bend, as Mae Ann Foster, she married Alex Hans, who survives. She is also survived by a sister, Bertha and her husband, Wayne Badollet of South Bend.
Mrs. Hans was the secretary to the manager of Bursley Wholesale Company, formerly located in South Bend, after which she went to work in the Voter's Registration Office. Mrs. Hans was a member of First Baptist Church in South Bend where she sang and was active in its choir. At the church, she also participated in the Fireside Inn Drama Group. She was a graduate of Riley High School and was a member of the Riley Lunch Bunch.
She had a great interest in music and was an accomplished pianist and taught many of the neighborhood children how to play piano. She was a member of the Bendix Chorale Group where she sang alto. She organized the Julia Chard Women's Business and Professional Group which met in the evenings. She was a member of the Women's Board at Memorial Hospital, and with a co-worker, established the library cart and opened the first gift shop at Memorial Hospital. She was active in neighborhood groups and did volunteer work visiting shut-ins.
Services for Mrs. Hans will be at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street. Rev. Dr. Kennard Wilson of First Baptist Church in South Bend and Rev. Tina Velthuizen of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will conduct the services. Honorary pall bearers will be Cordia Bender, Frances Spawn, Rosemarie Uvardy, Seana Ziliak and Suzie Larrick Smith. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today in the funeral, home. Entombment will take place in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.
