Edward Leon Modlin Sr.

Edward L. Modlin Sr., 80, who owned Shell service stations in Gaithersburg and Germantown from the late 1960s until he retired in 1990, died of pulmonary fibrosis April 15 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He lived in Gaithersburg.
He was a native of Kokomo, Ind., and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked in Indiana and Illinois for the Grand Trunk Railroad, Studebaker Corp. and National-Standard Co. before moving to the Washington area in 1964.
From 1964 to 1967, he was assistant secretary for the Associated Traffic Clubs of America and vice president of its insurance company. He was a past board member of the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club in Gaithersburg and was a 1995 recipient of Rotary International's Paul Harris fellowship.
He was a past member of the White House Conference on Small Business and Gaithersburg Planning and Zoning Commission. He moved to South Carolina in 1991 but returned to the Washington area last year.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nelida M. Modlin of Gaithersburg; a son, Edward L. Jr., of New Market, Md.; a daughter, Diana Kaspar of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister; a brother; and two granddaughters.
