Helen Margaret (Scheiman) Swift

Helen Margaret Swift, 79, loving wife of Raymond Anthony Swift, Sr., passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, Jan. 12, in Regency Place of South Bend, Ind. Helen resided on Baywood Lane, Granger, Ind. She was born the daughter of Gottlieb "Ebe" and Lillian (Raabe) Scheiman in South Bend on April 1920. Ebe preceded her in death in 1944. Lillian remarried in 1947, with William D. Holterman becoming Helen's stepfather.
Helen grew up in South Bend attending Lincoln School and graduating from Riley High School in 1938. She attended the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1942. Helen worked as a nurse in the South Bend area from 1942 to 1957.
On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1957, as Helen Margaret Scheiman, she married Raymond Anthony Swift, Sr., and they were happily married for 42 years. Helen became a homemaker upon marriage, and then a mother. Loving family members who survive include her husband, Raymond Anthony Swift, Sr., of Granger; three daughters, Mary Helen Goins of Clarksville, Tenn., Margaret Ann Swift of Granger and Marilyn Susan Banschbach of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a son, Raymond Anthony Swift, Jr., of Elkhart, Ind.; and by 10 grandchildren of whom she was very proud.
Helen had many interests. She loved to garden and feed the many birds that came to her feeders. Helen was interested in poetry and wrote poems for family members over the years. Helen and Raymond loved to travel and have enjoyed several trips the past 10 years. She was interested in researching the history of dolls and Norman Rockwell items. She loved to sing and played the accordion as a young girl. Her children and grandchildren have inherited her love music. Helen was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, in Christ the King Catholic Church, with Reverend Thomas J. Jones, , CSC, officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 14, in the Kaniewski: Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic School, 52473 U.S. 31/33 North, South Bend, IN 46637
