SOUTH BEND - Charles D. Whiting, Jr., 90, residing in South Bend, passed away at 2:22 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in Memorial Hospital. He was born November 15, 1920 to the late Charles D. and Marie (Potts) Whiting in South Bend, and remained a lifelong area resident. Charles served his country honorably during WWII in the Army Air Corps, and later belonged to the American Legion Post #161 of Mishawaka. He retired after 20 years as a route salesman for Frito Lay Company.

On August 16, 1941, in South Bend, Charles married the former Mary Lu Quimby, who preceded him in death on December 13, 2010. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Beverstein; and one brother, Robert Whiting.

Charles is survived by one daughter, Susan Marie (Patrick) O'Neill of South Bend; one son, Charles D. (Joyce) Whiting, III of Greenfield, IN; two grandchildren, Charles D. Whiting IV and Jennifer Dobbs; two step grandchildren, Clay Cage and Kyle Moore; and two great grandchildren, Caitlin Whiting and Samantha Dobbs.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2011 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Pastor Charles King will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Charles may be donated to the Portage Manor Activity Department, 3016 Portage Avenue, South Bend, IN 46628.
