Armando J. Mariottini Feb. 6, 1919 - March 28, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Armando J. Mariottini, 95, passed away at home on March 28, 2014, and is now soaring the heavens above dancing away.

He is survived by his loving daughter who resided with him, Suzanne Dias; and two sons, James of Mishawaka, and Daniel and his partner James Baker of Washington, D.C.. Armando is also survived by his 94-year-old sister, Alice Wiand of South Bend; numerous nieces, nephews; and his precious felines, Ripley, Stache and Molly.

Armando was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta; his sister, Rose Krasean; and his parents, Mary and Guido Mariottini.

Born on February 6, 1919, in West Stockbridge, MA, his family moved to South Bend at the age of 4. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1940-1945 and fought in WW II as a tank commander under General Patton in Africa, Italy, and Germany where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Armando was fortunate to have General Patton's son drive one of his tanks.

He married Loretta Rickert in 1947. They were married for 58 years, building their home and life in South Bend before her passing 2005. After the Army, Armando served with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 33 years, retiring in 1973. His retirement days were spent with his wife taking long drives in the country and enjoying life. He loved football, baseball and was die-hard Packers and an avid Notre Dame fan. Everyone who met him adored him, his stories, and his sense of humor. He was an easy man to love and cherish and we are all extremely fortunate that God blessed him with a long life.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 2, from 5-8 PM at the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood Dr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew Cathedral, with visitation one hour prior in the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Armando's name to the American Cancer Society , the Alzheimer's Association , or to the Center for Hospice Care.
