SOUTH BEND - Matthew L. Palatin, 71, of Byron Drive, died at 11:52 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Medical, Center. Mr. Palatin retired from AM General Corp., and was employed by the former Studebaker Corp. He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Minnehoff, Austria, and lived in South Bend for 68 years.

His first wife, Margaret Lemmerarth, died in 1967. On July 17, 1976, in South Bend, he married Catherine Agostino. She survives with three daughters, Barbara Palatin and Patricia Palatin, both of South Bend, and Margaret Palatin of Forney, Texas; two stepsons, James Agostino of Osceola and Robert Agostino of Niles; six step and a step great-grandchild.

He was a veteran of World War II and member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6 and United Auto Workers Local 5.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Zahoran Funeral Home, where the parish rosary will be said at 4 p.m.
