Wayne Lee Welcome , 77, of East Woodside, South Bend, Ind., died at 4:01 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in Memorial Hospital South Bend. He was born on Feb. 27, 1926, in South Bend to Otto and Wilma (Guise) Welcome. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Poor II, and by two sisters, Betty Rogers and Virginia Welcome. Wayne was honorably discharged from the United States Army on April 6, 1946, at Camp Atterbury, Ind.

On June 20, 1948, in South Bend, he married Patricia Davis, who survives along with a daughter, Leann Rebecca "Becky" Welcome -Poor of Austin, Texas; and three sons, Thomas (Kitty) Welcome of Noblesville, Ind., James Welcome of Austin and John (Robin) Welcome of South Bend. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Zachary Welcome -Poor, Sarah Welcome and Miranda and Shawn Welcome.

He retired from the South Bend Police Department in 1967 after 20 years of service, retiring as a sergeant in the hit-and-run division. Following his police career, Wayne was employed by the Preston Trucking Company, where he retired in 1988. His love for softball and baseball led him to coach Southeast Little League and different church softball teams. He had been a scout troop leader for Boy Scout Troop #131 at Ridgedale Presbyterian Church in South Bend. He was a former member of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, where he served a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Palmer Funeral Home -- Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, with Rev. Don Neely and Ed Friend officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, where Fraternal Order of Police #36 will perform final rites.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 24, in the funeral home.
