Paul Robert "Bob" Barkdull

May 4, 1922 - Aug. 30, 2001 Paul Robert "Bob" Barkdull, 79, residing on East Fox Street, South Bend, Ind., died peacefully at home Thursday, Aug. 30, while watching the 9th inning of the Cubs game, which they won! He was an avid Cubs fan for many years, along with Notre Dame football, and was a very fond listener of big band music. He was born May 4, 1922, in Fairmount, Ind., as the son of Paul Wilbur and Avis (Albertson) Barkdull, and had lived in South Bend since 1931, coming from Fairmount.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War I1, from 1942- 1946. On Sept. 20, 1946, in South Bend, he married Martha Snyder. She passed away June 17, 1983. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He leaves behind a daughter, Nancy Barkdull of South Bend; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sue Barkdull of Mishawaka, Ind.; his companion, Marilyn Platner of South Bend; three grandchildren, Nicole Barkdull, Brant Barkdull and Max Barkdull; and by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Roberta Barkdull of Plymouth, Ind.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Middleton in 2000.

Mr. Barkdull retired as a timestudy engineer from the Bendix Corporation in 1982 following 35 years of service. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 116, and American Legion Post 303, River Park.

Services for Mr. Barkdull will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin, pastor of Northway Church of Christ, will officiate. Military rites will follow by members of American Legion Post 303. Entombment will take place in Riverview Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 2, in the Palmer Funeral Home. Contributions in memory of Paul Robert Barkdull may be made to the American Cancer Society, 535 West Edison Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545
