Vida Mae (Castle) Powell

Vida Mae Powell , 83, of U. S. 31 South, South Bend, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2005, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. 
Vida was born on December 9, 1922, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to the late Chanucy Robin and Vida Louisia (Roberts) Castle and lived in this area most of her life. On May 25, 1947, in South Bend, she married Thomas Powell , who preceded her in death in July of 1997.

She is survived by four daughters, Janice (Robert Murray) Powell and Linda S. Helfrich, both of South Bend, Jane J. (Mel) Smith of Granger and Alice M. Umbaugh of Plymouth, Ind,; and one son, Terry G. Powell of South Bend. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jodie L. Conner, Roger A. Smith, Kirk J. Helfrich, Shay Ferriel, Ron T. Helfrich, Tina Helfrich, Jennifer Umbaugh and Jessica Umbaugh; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2006, in the Palmer Funeral Home--Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Rev. Ed Erskin will officiate. Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery.

Vida was a member of the Eastern Star, Lakeville, a volunteer cake decorating instructor for the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair, and a sponsor for the Indiana Rural Youth. She loved to crochet, knit and china paint.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Hospice of St. Joseph County
