SOUTH BEND - Emil A. Firtl, 93, passed away at 10:52 pm, Friday, April 3, 2015 in Morning View Care Facility. Emil was born September 11, 1921 in South Bend to the late Frank and Mary (Buzolich) Firtl. On April 12, 1947 in South Bend, Emil married Louise (Wensits) she preceded him in death on October 23, 2004. He was also preceded in death by a sister Mary Firtl and brothers Matt Firtl and Frank Firtl, Jr.
Survivors include daughter, Cindy (Richard) Helfman; son, Mark (Mary) Firtl; grandsons Jason (Kelly) Pletcher and Patrick (Amy) Firtl; granddaughters Jodi Pletcher and Lyndsey Firtl; and great granddaughters Avery Pletcher and Ashlee Hostetler.
Emil honorably served his country in the US Army and worked for the South Bend Community School Corporation for over 30 years. He was a devout Catholic and served for many years as an usher at St. Matthew Cathedral. He enjoyed golfing with his two brothers well into their 80's. Emil also enjoyed bowling, softball, fishing, and was an avid Notre Dame and White sox fan. He never missed a meal, was always smiling and joking, and had an extremely outgoing personality. Most of all Emil loved his family who will dearly miss him.
Donations may be made in Emil's name to the Harbor Light Hospice, 1608 E. Day Rd., Mishawaka, Indiana 46545. Visitation is 11am to 1pm, Friday, April 10, 2015 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Rd. A Memorial Service will begin at 1pm Friday in the Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net
