SOUTH BEND - Charles E. Hartman, 86, residing in South Bend, joined his Lord and Savior Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the home of his daughter in St. Joseph, Michigan, with his loving wife and family at his side when he died peacefully. He was born November 19, 1922 in South Bend, the son of Leo & Agnes (Sattler) Hartman, and has been a lifelong resident. After serving in the United States Navy during Word War II, he worked at Studebaker Corp. for 23 years, and then Adam & Westlake for 17 years. He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan, who always loved his music and dancing.

On June 1, 1946 at St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend, he was united in marriage to Rosemary G. Geiger. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage this past June. He is also survived by a son, Ed Hartman of Stevensville, MI, two daughters, Karen Hyman of St. Joseph, MI, and Peggy (William) Loos of Holland, MI. Six grandchildren, Scott (Beth) Loos, Chas (Pam) Hartman, Stephen (Jennifer) Loos, Chris (Karen) Hartman, Jennifer (Scott) Ashland, Dan Hyman and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Phil Hyman on March 14, 1999, twin grandsons, David and Dan Hartman and his sister, Willadene Sossomen.

Mr. Hartman was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church where he ushered, worked at Bingo, and served as a Trustee.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 10, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend. Rev. John Delaney will officiate. Graveside services with military rites will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, where a parish rosary will be said at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Visitation will also occur from 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Mr. Hartman may be offered to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
