Dorothy Lake (Kerver)

Dorothy Jean (Lake) Kerver

Dorothy Jean Kerver, 93, of Houston, TX, passed away Sunday, August 22nd, 2015 in her home with her family by her side. She was born in South Bend, Indiana and grew up with a love of sports, often returning to her home city to watch Notre Dame play football. She worked at the Studebaker plant and came to Houston in 1949 in a 1947 Studebaker.

She loved to ski and went every year since the early 1960s; we remember many fun family vacations on the ski slopes. And we remember our annual vacation to New Braunfels in the early 50s, where we remember her playing bridge by the side of the pool at Camp Landa. She was a member of the Sandalwood Garden Club for 40 years and square dance clubs for just as long.

She earned her nursing license and volunteered in hospitals for many decades.

She was a master duplicate bridge player, becoming an instructor on cruise ships and travelling around the world. She was an avid reader, and when she became chair bound in her later years, she consumed three books a week. In her final days, she loved watching the hummingbirds and lizards peer back at her through the living room windows, watching Notre Dame Mass on Sunday mornings and saying "peace be with you" as we held hands, and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play games-her favorite was Sequence.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Kingsley Kerver, as well as her four sisters.

She is survived by her brother, her children, her grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who helped take care of our mother in her last years: Davita - Memorial Dialysis, Advocates for the Independent and Hospice Compassus. Friends are invited to visitation with the family on Thursday, August 27th 6:00pm-8:00pm with a Vigil service at 7:00pm in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Home, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 28th, at 11:00am in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
