Earl Hartup, 81, was born on Oct. 31, 1919, in South Bend, Ind., and passed away on Monday, Oct. 15.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Louise Hartup.

He was beloved father to three sons and two daughters: John and daughter-inlaw, Sue of Ossian, Ind., Daniel and daughter-in-law, Marilyn of Carrollton, Texas, Mark of South Bend, Carol and son-in-law, Kenneth Ragsdale of Mishawaka, Ind., and Suzanne and son-in-law, Tery Brown of Carrollton. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Deborah Switalski, David Switalski, Jennifer Brown, Joel Brown, Laura Green, Anne Ringger, Ryan Hartup, Kimberly Ragsdale, Jennifer Mammolenti, Heather Hack, David Fazio and Danny Fazio; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen and brother-in-law, George St. Clair of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Louis and Jacqueline Rosner of Largo, Fla.; and by a longtime special friend, Helen Gilbert of Elkhart, Ind.

Earl was an athlete and attended both the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University where he still holds a track and field record. He served as a South Bend police officer for a number of years before entering the insurance industry where he worked for many years, and most recently with the Transamerica Corporation, from which he retired 20 years ago. Memberships included the Masonic Lodge 45 F&A.M. of St. Joe County, VFW Post 303, Moose Lodge 1423 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, all in the local area, and the Elks of Port Orange, Fla.

Visitation for Earl will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, located at Ironwood and Jefferson. Services will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 18, in the funeral home
