Joseph Bernat
BERNAT WINS BRONZE STAR IN LEYTE BATTLE Because he stayed at his post heroically in spite of being zeroed in by enemy artillery, Pfc. Joseph Bernat; of 1725 South Franklin street, 'has been awarded the Bronze Star medal, according to an army dispatch. In the action which took place Dec. 10. on Leyte, Private Bernat was an observer spotting enem emplacements.
Several had been located and artillery fire was placed on them. The enemy, locating his observation post, poured round after round of .75 mm. fire into the position. According to the dispatch, struck six feet from Private Bernat.
He remained at his states, and was able to locate two of the artillery pieces as well as advancing troops. Counterfire was immediately placed on the guns. His heroic action, the dispatch adds, "speeded the advance of assault troops and materially reduced casualties." A brother, Pfc. Steven, is with the Seventh army in France.
