Lillian E. Monroe, 79, of Mishawaka, Ind., died at 1:04 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Saint Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. She was born in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 25, 1921, to Otto and Martha Engstrom.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha Millbaugh of Mishawaka; three sons, David Altheide of Fort Wayne, Ind., Myron Monroe of Elkhart, Ind., and Marc Monroe of Buchanan, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Engstrom of Leslie, Ark.; and by her special friend, Barbara Lampert.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Engstrom.

Lillian retired in 1992 from Michiana Community Hospital as a dietitian. She spent many years in the health care and retirement communities, working in the dietary departments. She enjoyed reading, drawing, gardening, and caring for her parakeet.

Family and friends may call at the FOREST G. HAY FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, Sept. 15, one hour prior to her services at noon Saturday in the funeral home. Rev. David Henry is officiating Lillian's service, and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery
