Helen M. (Lindahl) Allen

Helen M. Allen, 79, of Homestead, Fla., passed away on Thursday, Oct. 19, from complications due to a stroke.
She was born on April 8, 1921, in South Bend, Ind., to the late Arthur Lindahl and Hannah Lindahl Hoerstman. She attended high school in South Bend, then attended South Bend Business College, now called Michiaria Business College, where she graduated in 1940. She worked for Traveler's Insurance Company, the Bendix Aviation Corporation, and the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend through the 1940s.
She married her lifelong husband, George E. Allen on Feb. 6, 1943. In the spring of 1948, they moved to Homestead and built the home in which they have lived ever since. She served in various positions for South Dade Farms, Inc. (Sotilie, Inc.), South Dade Farmers Bank, and the Bank of Kendall. In 1964 she began working for Sylvester P. Adair, attorney, in Homestead. She retired from that position in 1987. She was a charter r member of the Flamingo Chapter of the American Business Women's Association in 1970, and was a 25-year member. ABWA named her "Woman of the Year" in 1975. She joined Soroptimist International in 1975, and served in a variety of positions, including president form 1982 through 1984, and director from 1984 through 1987.
Beginning in 1993 as a Soroptimist project, she and Sue Askins directed the Candy Striper program at James Archer Smith Hospital in Homestead. She has been a member of The Nature Conservancy since the late 1960s, and served as treasurer for the State Chapter for sixteen years, ending in 1981. She also served as a volunteer for the Tropical Everglades Visitor Center in Homestead since 1988.
She is survived by her husband George, and a daughter, Diane. Allen of Utah.
Relatives and friend were invited to attend a memorial service which was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Branam Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Auten officiating. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, Florida Chapter, 222 S. Westmonte Drive, Suite 300, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714.
