CRYSTAL LAKE - Arthur L. Reed, 82, of Crystal Lake, died Feb. 12 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. He was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Warsaw, Ind., to Leroy D. and Bernice (Bennett) Reed. He grew up in South Bend, Ind., and graduated from Kalamazoo College. He served in the South Pacific as a Naval officer during World War He He later did graduate work at Indiana University and the University of Michigan, where he earned a master's degree in biology.
He loved to travel, read and write, and was a rock hound and bird lover. He was active in many organizations including the Troubadours writing group, the Health Bridge Arthritis Water Exercise Group, the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical & Geological Societies, the Des Plaines Valley Geological Society, and the Elgin Rock & Mineral Society. He won many awards as editor of the Crystal Lake mineralogical newsletter and for poetry submitted to national competitions.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Helen; a sister. Margaret of New York; two sons, Michael (Susan McGill) of Albuquerque, N.M., and James (Barbara Wuthrich) of Crystal Lake; and two grandsons, Nathan and Benjamin, both of Chicago.
A memorial open house will be from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 6, at 345 Cumberland Lane, Gate 8. Lakewood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice
