Raymond L. "Punch" Nemeth

Raymond L. "Punch" Nemeth, .67, of 5726 Bayswater Place, died at 6:40 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Mr.
Nemeth retired in August 1985 from the South Bend Park Department after 31 years service as assistant superintendent. Mr. Nemeth helped to create many of the city's newest parks at a time when the park system underwent its greatest expansion. He was involved in all phases of the design and construction of the park and their maintenance. Among the parks he helped design were Belleville Park, Dean Johnson Park, Boland Park, Pier Park, Boehm Park, Island Park and River Bend Plaza.
He served as a member of the chain crew at, University of Notre Dame home football games for 42 years. Mr. Nemeth was born Aug. 22, 1920, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.
On July 19, 1941, in South Bend, he married Eloise M. Long, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Woodhurst of South Bend; a son, Ronald W. of Houston, formerly of Chelsea, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 3:30 p.m.
He was a member of the church, Knights of Columbus Council 5521 for 25 years and Indiana High School Athletic Association for 30 years; was a high school referee for football, baseball and basketball; member of St. Joseph Valley Athletic Officials' Association, lifetime honorary member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36, and a member of American Association of Retired Persons
