Paul J. “Baldy” Szalay
Aug. 14, 1915 – Jan. 5, 2005 Paul J. “Baldy” Szalay, 89, of Taylor Street, passed away at 12:00 p.m.Wednesday, January 5, 2005, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Mr.Szalay retired in 1981 from South Bend Lathe where he was employed for 45 years.
Baldy coached at South Bend Lathe and Our Lady of Hungary School. He was active in the St.Vincent de Paul Society, and was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, its Holy Name Society and Ushers Club. He also belonged to the D.F.V. German Club, William Penn Association, Rum Village Neighborhood Association, AARP, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Paul was born on August 14, 1915, in South Bend, to Paul C.and Ethel (Gorbitz) Szalay. On August 30, 1941, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, he married the former Christine Wieger, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Kathleen (John) Scheu and Mary Elizabeth (David) Horvath, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, John Paul (Tina) Scheu, Nicholas (Molly) Scheu and Josef Horvath;a sister, Ethel Gotowka of South Bend; and a brother, Charles (Sylvia) Szalay of Livonia, Michigan.
Mr.Szalay was preceded in death by a daughter, Paulette Marie Szalay;and a sister, Ann Farkas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.today, January 8, 2005, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church.Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m.Friday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S.Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary was recited at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church.
