James “Al” Sanders, age 60 of Wakarusa, IN, died at 6 pm on Monday, April 8, 2024 in Crown Point, IN. He was born on January 18, 1964 in Mishawaka, IN to Billy Dean and Carolyn (Sauer) Sanders.  

Al was a 1983 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend and he lived his entire life in the Northern Indiana area; having lived in Plymouth, Bremen, and Wakarusa at different times throughout his life. He worked for many years at Prime-Time Manufacturing in Wakarusa, and had previously worked at Monaco Coach.

Al served as a volunteer fireman in Wakarusa for 20+ years and was very proud to serve his community as a fire fighter. Al was an avid softball player and competed across Northern Indiana for many years. He was active in Enduro Racing at New Paris Speedway and was a fan of sprint car racing and NASCAR. He worked for many years at South Bend Motor Speedway when his family members owned the raceway. Al will also be remembered for his cooking; he enjoyed cooking for family and friends.  

Al is survived by 4 children: Santanna (Steven) Shook of Rochester, IN, Samantha (Spencer) Wilson of Bremen, IN, Brianna Sanders of Nappanee, and Maguire Alderman of Wakarusa; 7 grandchildren: Aiden, Kaedra, Zyler, Amaya, Olivia, Lacie, and Kierra; significant other, Tammy Martin of Elkhart; and 2 siblings: Kimberly Sanders of Paron, AR, and Billy Sanders of Vilonia, AR. Al was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Larry and Doug Sanders.  

Visitation will be held from 3-6 pm on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, IN. A memorial service will begin at 6 pm and private family burial will take place on Wednesday morning at Bremen Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Al’s name can be given to the family to help with funeral expenses.
