Brett Joseph Leatherman

Brett J. Leatherman, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, at the age of 34, in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana.

Born on March 21, 1990, to Joseph and Renee (Purkal) Leatherman, Brett grew up in a loving family, with his sister Tara (Kevin) Leatherman, who blessed him with a beloved niece, Lainee Carter. He was the adored grandson of Anita Purkal and Mary Smith, and he held the memory of his late grandfathers, Robert Purkal and Wallace Leatherman, close to his heart.

Brett was a proud graduate of South Bend Riley High School, class of 2009, where he forged lifelong friendships and showcased his friendly and generous nature. After high school, Brett dedicated himself to his role as a Store Manager at Pat's Pets, where he combined his love for animals with his innate leadership abilities.

Those who knew Brett understood his passion for the world around him. Whether he was immersed in his favorite video game, enjoying the great outdoors, or watching "The Lord of the Rings," he did so with a full heart. At home, his two cats, Frodo and Gimli, were his beloved companions, reflecting his immense love for all animals.

Brett's presence was a gift to his family, who fondly remembers his love of being surrounded by relatives and the way his laughter enriched every family gathering. A true friend to everyone he met, Brett will be remembered as a loving and big-hearted individual, whose generosity and warm spirit touched the lives of many.

A time to visit with the family will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A memorial service will follow beginning at 12 p.m. all being held at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN 46614.

Memorial contributions may be made in Brett’s name to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Rd. Mishawaka, IN 46545.
