A South Bend father of three children suffered fatal injuries Sunday night when he plunged down a flight of basement steps in his home which he was remodeling.

Roger W. Eby, 39, of 942 Bellevue Ave., died at 11:40 o'clock in St. Joseph Hospital three hours after the accident. St. Joseph Deputy Coroner Dr. Joseph S. Stratigos said death was attributed to a skull fracture which resulted in a brain injury. He ruled the death accidental

Relatives’ said Eby's clothing apparently caught on a board which protruded into the stairwell, causing the fall. He was returning tools to the basement workshop when the accident ocurred. Eby had been erecting an addition to the rear of the home. Marie, 15, heard a crash and found Eby sprawled unconscious at the bottom of the stairs.

Mr. Eby was born Sept. 9. 1917. in Elkhart, Ind., and had lived in South Bend for 37 years. On April 26. 1941, in South Bend he married Helen Wensits. Mr. Eby was a welder at the Studebaker-Packard Corp. Other survivors are the two daughters, Helen Marie and Judith Kay; and one son. Joseph J., all at home; his mother. Mrs. Floyd Wolfgang. of South Bend; two brothers, Willam and Richard, both of Mishawaka; and two half brothers. Robert Eby, of South Bend. and James Steele, of Elkhart.
