James E. Barkley
March 7, 1919 - Dec. 11, 2001
James E. Barkley, 82, of South Bend, Ind., passed away following an illness on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 7, 1919, in South Bend, to the late Frank T. and. C (Brothers) Barkley. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
On Jan. 11, 1947, he married Alice A. Tetzloff, who died in 1996.
On July 7, 2000, he married Beatrice Poole, who survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Jacquelene A. Wert of South Bend and Jane E. DeVries of Chesterton, Ind.; a son, James M. (Cindy) Barkley of Indianapolis, Ind.; and by grandchildren, Christopher Wert, Carrie Wert, Courtney Lambert, Geoffrey Lambert, Casey Lambert and Joshua DeVries, Megan Barkley and Colin Barkley.
Mr. Barkley was retired from his insurance agency and worked for the Tower Insurance Agency. Mr. Barkley was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, was a volunteer on the church newsletter Amazing Grace, and was active in many other church activities.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, was past president of the E Board of Zoning Appeals, worked for the City Planning Commission under John Scott, and was a life member of the I.U. Alumni Association.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in the Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 South Twyckenham Drive, where friends may call from 4 p.m. until time of services. Private burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery.
